Where does the tradition of carving pumpkins for Halloween come from?

The origin of pumpkin carving for Halloween goes back to the Irish legend of Jack O'Lantern. Traditionally, hollowed-out turnips were lit with candles, to ward off evil spirits.

When Irish immigrants came to America in the 19th century, they replaced the turnips with pumpkins, as these were more plentiful and easier to carve in the USA. This is how today's tradition of decorating pumpkins with scary faces and putting them up as Halloween decorations came about.
