The Thermomix® and its manufacturer: Vorwerk under the magnifying glass

Vorwerk is the manufacturer of the Thermomix® and a family business founded in 1883 by the brothers Carl and Adolf Vorwerk (1853-1925). Over the decades, the Wuppertal-based company grew into a diversified international group. Besides the Thermomix®, Vorwerk brings other products from the following categories onto the market:

  • Household appliances
  • Vacuum cleaners under the Kobold brand name
  • Cosmetics
  • Carpets
  • floor coverings

The company, which is managed as a limited partnership, employs more than half a million people in over 60 countries worldwide. The majority of them are independent sales representatives. The products are manufactured in Germany and other parts of the world. In summer 2019, Vorwerk announced that the final assembly of the Thermomix® kitchen appliances will no longer take place in Wuppertal. It now takes place at the production plant in France and China. Some of the Thermomix® components such as the motor and the mixing blade are still manufactured at the headquarters.

How Vorwerk explains the Thermomix® onto the market

The beginnings of the Thermomix® go back to 1961, when Vorwerk launched a universal kitchen appliance on the market for the first time. It bore the futuristic name "VKM5". The appliance delighted customers as it combined seven kitchen functions.

1960s and 1970s

In the late 1960s, further models of the Thermomix®: VM10 and VM20. In 1971 Vorwerk introduced the actual originalThermomix® with the VM 2000. The French went crazy for it, as they were able to prepare even better thickened soups with the appliance. The VM2002 and VM2200 followed later in the 1970s.

1980s - years

Vorwerk acquired the Vorwerk brand Thermomix and developed the Thermomix TM3000. Its groundbreaking innovation was that the appliance could cook. Just a few years later, amateur chefs were able to enjoy the TM3300, which had an electric speed control with 12 settings. The temperature could now also be selected.

1990s and beginning of the new millennium

It was quiet for a few years around the Thermomix®. The product developers at Vorwerk worked on new functions for the universal kitchen appliance and finally, in 1996, presented the Thermomix® TM21. It had a larger mixing bowl and the Varoma steam cooking attachment. A display for the cooking time and integrated scales further optimized the appliance. In the period between 2004 and 2014, the TM31 was the latest Thermomix® model.

2010s

Finally, particularly high sales figures in the millions were generated by the ThermomixA touchscreen, recipe chips, an automatic sealing system and many other features optimized it. Vorwerk had to expand its plants due to the high demand. However, the engineers did not rest on their laurels and in 2019 launched the Thermomix® TM6 onto the market. It is similar to its predecessor model, but boasts enhanced functions such as integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
